Why Is Electrolyte Filling Critical in Battery Manufacturing ?
Electrolyte filling is a decisive stage in cell manufacturing because the quality of the filling and wetting process directly influences cell performance, consistency and lifetime.
At laboratory scale, cells may be filled manually inside a glove box, with small pouch cells sealed at atmospheric pressure. This approach can be suitable for early testing, but it provides limited control over dosing, vacuum, pressure and electrolyte distribution.
As a project progresses from prototyping to pilot-line and industrial production, the process must become repeatable, traceable and safe. Cell chemistry, format and internal design all affect the filling recipe. Recent developments, including compact cell architectures with limited free volume and polymerizable electrolytes for semi-solid cells, introduce additional process constraints. This is why each filling solution must be engineered around the cell, the electrolyte, the target throughput and the production environment.

Vacuum Electrolyte Filling for Controlled Dosing and Soaking
Vacuum electrolyte filling helps remove trapped air and supports electrolyte penetration into the cell components. Depending on the cell format and process recipe, the filling sequence can combine neutral-gas flushing, vacuum phases, controlled dosing, pressure cycles and soaking stages.
Our programmable filling sequences allow operators to configure :
- vacuum and pressure setpoints;
- electrolyte volume;
- filling speed;
- the number and order of process stages;
- the duration of each stage;
- neutral-gas flushing;
- soaking conditions;
- degassing and sealing operations.
These parameters can be adjusted to the cell architecture, electrolyte properties to improve the cell performance.
Battery Filling Machine Features
Depending on the application, our filling stations can include :
- support for multiple cell formats and dimensions,
- standalone or in-line configurations,
- electrolyte dosing accuracy ranging from ±0.2% to ±0.8%,
- depending on the application,
- programmable multi-stage filling recipes,
- controlled vacuum and pressure cycles,
- neutral-gas flushing, pre-fill and post-fill cell weighing,
- electrolyte-compatible material selection,
- pouch-cell degassing,
- integrated vacuum sealing for pouch cells,
- cell inspection and process control,
- detection of hazardous operating conditions,
- controlled disposal of a cell following an unexpected hazardous event,
- quality-control and traceability functions.
Each battery filling machine can be configured as an independent production unit or integrated with upstream and downstream cell assembly operations.

Safety and HSE Management
Electrolyte filling introduces specific risks related to corrosive substances, vapours, pressure, handling and the activation of cells once the electrolyte has been introduced.
Huguet Battery Processes considers safety from the earliest project stages. The risk assessment covers not only the machine, but also its operating environment and its interfaces with :
- electrolyte supply,
- dry-cell loading,
- gas and fluid utilities,
- filled-cell unloading,
- ventilation and air renewal,
- the dry room,
- production room or building in which the equipment is installed.
The final safety strategy is defined jointly with the customer and adapted to the process, chemistry, site requirements and applicable HSE rules. While overall site safety remains the user’s responsibility, our engineering teams design the equipment and its integration to support the safe implementation of the complete filling process.
Depending on the risk assessment, the system may include vapour containment, atmosphere monitoring, dedicated sensors, controlled air renewal and automated procedures for managing abnormal events.
Quality Control and Process Reliability
Our electrolyte filling solutions are designed to support repeatable production through :
- integrated safety functions,
- quality assurance and quality control throughout the process,
- precise control of filling parameters,
- cell inspection and weighing,
- programmable and reproducible recipes,
- compatibility with multiple cell formats,
- configurations designed for industrial production environments.
Process data and control points can be adapted to the customer’s quality requirements and production architecture.
Automated Filling Station for Semi-Solid Pouch Cells
Huguet Battery Processes designed and installed an automated filling station for semi-solid-state pouch cells using a polymerizable electrolyte. The level of automation was defined according to the target production volume and recipe cycle time. The automated cycle covers the complete sequence from dry-cell pick-up to the placement of the filled cell in an exit buffer.
Cell formats and integrated processes
- Pouch-cell formats from 50 × 50 mm to 180 × 180 mm,
- compatibility with polymerizable electrolyte,
- cell inspection and weighing, cell opening,
- transfer into the filling chamber,
- neutral-gas flushing,
- controlled vacuum,
- electrolyte dosing,
- sealing,
- automatic transfer to the exit buffer.
Achieved performance
- Productivity: one cell every two to six minutes, depending on the recipe,
- OEE : above 95% under the defined operating conditions,
- autonomous operation for up to 20 cells,
- installation outside the dry room using a dedicated controlled microenvironment.
This configuration reduces the equipment installed inside the dry room while maintaining the environmental conditions required by the filling process.
